The week of August 3, 2026, Alibaba shippedQwen 3.8 Max, a 2.4-trillion-parameter sparse MoE that ranks #2 globally on the Arena leaderboard and #12 on Artificial Analysis's Coding Index, at $2.00 per million input and $6.00 per million output. Seven days later, Upstage shippedSolar Pro 4, a closed-weight agent flagship priced at $0.03 and $0.12. Both are marketed as "agentic" models built for long, multi-step work. One is the strongest open-weights play of the Chinese summer, the other is the cheapest commercial "agent model" label in 2026. They are not really competing on capability — they are competing on what a developer is allowed to assume about a model before the first token is spent.
Two launches, two assumptions
Qwen 3.8 Max came out of Alibaba's labs on August 3 with the trappings of a frontier launch: 2.4T total parameters (about 95B active per token), a 1M-token context, native text-image-video input, a #2 Arena ranking, and an audited Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index of 58. It is, on independent evidence, in the global top tier of open-weight models. Alibaba has said the weights will be released, following the Qwen pattern, which would make it the first open-sourced Max-class Qwen. Solar Pro 4 arrived August 10 with a different set of assumptions. Upstage's release material describes improvements in long-document reasoning, multi-turn tool use and terminal task performance over Solar Pro 3, with no disclosed parameter count and no independent benchmark. Its entire differentiator is price: $0.03/$0.12 is roughly 66× cheaper on input and 50× cheaper on output than Qwen 3.8 Max. Where Qwen 3.8 Max asks you to believe a 2.4T model with audited scores, Solar Pro 4 asks you to believe a price.

But this specific comparison, right now, is "audited evidence" against "a launch-price claim," and the honest way to read any head-to-head is to say so.
What the 100× gap actually buys

Solar Pro 4 has nothing of that kind yet. If its quality is anywhere near Qwen's, it is the best deal on the board. If it is not, the $0.03 price will show exactly why it costs $0.03.

The open-weights fork
