Two image models, two price points that look like the same price, and fifty-eight Elo between them. Ideogram 4.5 went live on September 30, 2026, positioned as the precise editor — the model that stops your tenth edit from destroying your first. GPT Image 2 shipped on April 21, 2026, and has spent six months being the default image model that teams call when they don't want to think about it. The interesting thing about putting them side by side is that the practical case for switching is narrower than the launch coverage suggested, and the practical case for the incumbent is stronger than most people assume.

The comparison, dimension by dimension

• Availability — GPT Image 2 is callable today on OpenAI's own API and on routed infrastructure; Ideogram 4.5 is on Ideogram's own app, its API and partner platforms.

• Headline capability — precise localised editing that preserves surrounding pixels, vs a general-purpose generator-and-editor with the broadest third-party integration of any image model.

• Output size — native 2K at the top setting with edits demonstrated on a 4,016 × 6,016 source, vs 1024 × 1024 as the standard unit at medium and high quality.

• Rendering tiers — four speeds (Turbo, Balanced, Quality, High) for Ideogram 4.5, vs quality tiers with a transparent-background mode added in a preview on August 20, 2026 for GPT Image 2.

• Billing — per image, $0.03 to $0.22 across the ladder, vs token-metered, which lands near $0.05 for a medium 1024 × 1024 render and near $0.21 at high.

• Independent editing score — 1,064 Elo from 2,459 samples for Ideogram 4.5 at High vs 1,122 Elo from 14,157 samples for GPT Image 2 at high, both on Artificial Analysis's image editing board.

The price is a coincidence, and it hides the real difference

Ideogram 4.5 at High costs $0.22 per image. GPT Image 2 at high quality costs roughly $0.21 for a 1024 × 1024 render. One cent apart. Anyone reading those two numbers as a tie has been misled by a coincidence, because the units are not the same.

GPT Image 2 is billed by token, and the count scales with the image you ask for. At medium it lands near a nickel; at high, near twenty-one cents. Ideogram 4.5's ladder is fixed per image regardless of resolution, with the $0.22 sitting at the top of a four-step menu that starts at three cents and passes through six. Run a hundred prompt-to-image generations and the incumbent is cheaper at medium and comparable at high. Run a hundred localised edits on existing files, which is what 4.5 is for, and the arithmetic inverts — you are paying the High rate every time, and you are paying it for the capability rather than for the pixels.

The honest summary is that the two models are near price parity for the work they share, and nowhere near parity for the work they don't.

A generated two-column comparison scoreboard for Ideogram 4.5 and GPT Image 2. The Ideogram column reads 'Released: Sep 30, 2026', 'Editing score: Elo 1,064', 'Editing rank: 23', 'Output: native 2K', 'Billing: per image' and 'Price: $0.22 at High'; the GPT Image 2 column reads 'Released: Apr 21, 2026', 'Editing score: Elo 1,122', 'Editing rank: 5', 'Output: 1024 px standard', 'Billing: per token' and 'Price: about $0.21 at high'. What the independent board says, and how much weight it carries

On Artificial Analysis's image editing board, GPT Image 2 (high) sits at 1,122 Elo from 14,157 votes, released April 2026, with an API price of $211.00 per 1,000 images on the board's own conversion. Ideogram 4.5 (High) sits at 1,064 Elo from 2,459 votes, released September 2026, at $220.00 per 1,000. That is a 58-point gap in the incumbent's favour, and a nine-dollar difference in the converted rate — the "same price" story showing up again in a different unit.

The gap is real, and so is the caveat. 14,157 votes against 2,459 is a six-to-one difference in sample size, and on a board where the leading rows carry twelve to eighteen thousand votes the confidence interval on 4.5 is noticeably wider. Brand-new models also attract protest votes in both directions, so a launch-week reading is a poor predictor of where a model settles. Treat 58 Elo as the current state of a measurement that is still moving, not as a verdict.

Where GPT Image 2 quietly wins

The incumbent's advantage is not the score, it is the surface area. GPT Image 2 is the model your design tool already supports, the one your agency already has a contract for, and the one whose output quality your reviewers have calibrated their expectations against. It also gained a transparent-background preview in August, which matters enormously to anyone placing generated assets on a layout — and which is not a capability Ideogram 4.5's launch material claims.

Meanwhile the whole Ideogram 4.5 pitch — the drift claim, the preserved edges, the 24.2-megapixel source — is a claim about a workload no public leaderboard measures.

A screenshot of the Artificial Analysis image editing leaderboard, captured in English, showing GPT Image 2 (high) at 1,122 Elo from 14,157 samples at $211.0 per 1,000 images and Ideogram 4.5 (High) at rank 23 with 1,064 Elo from 2,459 samples at $220.0 per 1,000, with GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst (max) first at 1,182 Elo.

Neither board asks a voter to compare the tenth edit in a sequence against the first. So the one property that would justify a switch is the one property nobody has scored, and the property that can be scored favours the model you already have.

Calling both from one place

GPT Image 2 is on OrcaRouter's catalogue under its OpenAI identifier, so if you want to run this comparison yourself rather than take a board's word for it, you can call both sides of it from one key. Ideogram 4.5 is not on our catalogue — it is available through the vendor's own API and several third-party platforms, and we are not one of them.

What that arrangement buys you is a clean A/B without a second contract, a second SDK or a second set of credentials. Point the same prompt and the same source image at each model, diff the outputs, and price the pair at dollars per accepted image rather than dollars per call. Because everything is billed at provider list price with no markup added, a vendor price cut on either side is live on your invoice the same day it lands, which matters when the gap you are measuring is nine dollars per thousand. And if you want to hedge a launch-week model against an overrun, automatic failover will keep the call inside a working provider without you writing the retry logic.

Who should move, and who should wait

Move to Ideogram 4.5 if repeated localised editing on large files is a named bottleneck in your workflow — if your team currently exports to Photoshop to make five small changes because the model keeps re-synthesising everything else. That is the specific job this model was built for, and no other model is currently making a comparable claim with a 24-megapixel demo behind it.

Stay with GPT Image 2 if your workload is generation-first, if you need transparent backgrounds today, or if your reviewers have already calibrated against its output. Wait for the editing sample to grow past a few thousand votes before you move a production path on the strength of a rank. And if you do switch, keep the old model reachable — the case for Ideogram 4.5 rests on a capability that no third party has yet tested, and the cheapest insurance against a claim that doesn't hold is a fallback that still answers.

Both models are one call away. GPT Image 2 on OrcaRouter Call the incumbent from the same key you already use.
